Opelika police have arrested a woman accused of attempting to fraudulently obtain a home equity loan using her husband’s identity without his knowledge.

According to police, the investigation began on Tuesday, Dec. 30, after officers received a report of a suspected fraud attempt. Authorities allege that 58-year-old Tammy Renee Caudle tried to secure a $150,000 home equity loan on property owned by her husband.

Investigators said Caudle made multiple attempts to forge her husband’s identity in an effort to obtain the loan. Police later spoke with the husband, who confirmed he was unaware of any loan application and had not authorized it.

Caudle was taken into custody and charged with residential mortgage fraud, second-degree forgery, and bribery of a public servant. She was booked into the Lee County Jail, police said.
