PETALING JAYA: T Kerubahkaran, 29, pleaded not guilty today in the Melaka magistrates’ court to charges of stealing cables and driving recklessly to evade police earlier this month.
The accused was read six charges in two separate proceedings before magistrates Sharda Shienha Suleiman and Uthman Ghani, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.
Under the first set of charges, Kerubahkaran was accused of reckless driving under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (2020 Amendment) and falsifying the number plate of his Toyota Hilux under Section 108(1) of the same Act. These offences were allegedly committed around 4:30 a.m. on May 6 on the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin highway in Cheng, Melaka.
Deputy public prosecutor Wan Abdullah Rodzlad proposed bail at RM8,000 for the first charge and RM6,000 for the second. However, Kerubahkaran requested a lower bail, citing his five-month-old child who has a heart condition. Magistrate Sharda allowed bail of RM4,000 for both charges, with one surety, and set June 19 for the next court date.
In the second set of charges, before magistrate Uthman, Kerubahkaran was charged with three counts of stealing cables from Telekom Malaysia Bhd, under Section 379 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code. He was also charged with obstructing civil servants in the performance of their duties under Section 186 of the Penal Code.
Bail for the four charges was set at RM5,000, and the court scheduled a re-mention of the case for June 19.
The charges stem from a dramatic 100km police chase on May 6, which began in Taman Teknologi Cheng, Melaka, and ended at Km216.8 on the North-South Expressway towards Kuala Lumpur.
