In a swift crackdown, New Delhi District Police solved a high-profile abduction and robbery case within 48 hours, arresting three accused involved in impersonating government officials and looting Rs 30 lakh from a luxury car showroom in Chanakyapuri.
The crime unfolded on July 2 when Anil Tiwari, Assistant Manager at Exclusive Motors Pvt Ltd—a dealership for Bentley and other luxury cars—was abducted near the Hungarian Embassy by two men, one posing as a policeman. They falsely claimed he was under arrest in an Enforcement Directorate (ED) case and forcibly brought him to the showroom.
There, under the guise of an ED raid, the accused stole Rs 30 lakh kept in the boot of a Bentley. After releasing Tiwari near Rajokari, they fled. The showroom owner later confirmed that no such ED raid was scheduled and promptly filed an FIR at Chanakyapuri Police Station.
A special police team, led by SHO Balihar Singh and supervised by ACP Arti Sharma, launched a detailed technical and forensic probe. CCTV footage identified a Wagon-R involved in the crime, traced to Sunil Kumar Taneja (46), a Gurugram-based driver.
Taneja was arrested on July 5. Interrogation led to the capture of co-accused Suraj (22) and showroom employee Sumit Yadav (25). Investigations revealed Sumit Yadav, a sales executive at the showroom, had provided inside information to Taneja. Both had previously worked at Spinny, an online car sales company, where they allegedly conspired to steal money from the showroom.
Sunil Kumar Taneja also knew Suraj from their past job at a property dealer’s office in Najafgarh, where they worked together for several years.
Police recovered Rs 15 lakh in cash, froze an Rs 8 lakh fixed deposit by Taneja, and seized the Wagon-R used in the crime along with a Tata Punch bought with stolen funds. A fake ED document used during the fake raid was also recovered.
