One more arrest has been made in the chilling murder of Laxman S. Shinde, a Pune-based businessman who fell victim to a cybercrime gang’s fake business proposition. On Thursday, Patna SSP Awakash Kumar confirmed the arrest of Sumit Kumar, who allegedly drove the victim from Patna airport to Hilsa in Nalanda district on April 11.

With this development, a total of eight people have been arrested in the case so far.

Shinde had landed at Patna airport at 7:30 PM and was soon abducted by the gang under the pretext of a business deal. According to police, he was kidnapped, tortured, and killed, with his body later dumped on NH-33 in the Ghosi police station area of Jehanabad district.

Sumit Kumar is currently being interrogated by the authorities. Mahato Ranjit Patel, alias Munna, a prime accused in the case, is also in police custody. His interrogation has led to fresh leads, including the identification of other gang members and previously unreported cases.

Munna, with a background in the scrap business, allegedly used fake business proposals—sent via email impersonating Coal India—to lure victims. These emails promised lucrative deals and investment opportunities, effectively scamming businessmen across the country.

Investigations have uncovered that the same gang has previously defrauded businessmen from Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Jharkhand, and Bangalore, with extortion amounts ranging from Rs7 lakh to Rs50 lakh.

SSP Awakash Kumar added that the number of related fraud cases has risen from five to seven, and more victims are being contacted to strengthen the chargesheet.

Raids are ongoing to apprehend other absconding members of the gang, as police work to bring swift justice in this growing cybercrime and murder nexus.
