Shyampukur police have arrested Sumit, husband of Puja Purkait, for allegedly killing her and attempting to disguise it as a suicide. The couple had a nine-year-old daughter, authorities said.
The incident came to light on Saturday when Puja was brought to a private hospital by her brother-in-law, reportedly after an attempted suicide. She died a few hours later.
Police investigations revealed suspicious circumstances. A purported note at the in-laws’ home claimed “no one was responsible for our death”, while Sumit was missing. Preliminary postmortem reports suggested that Puja had been strangled, raising suspicion of foul play.
On Sunday, Sumit surrendered at Shyampukur police station and reportedly confessed to killing his wife. According to police, he admitted that Puja was having an extramarital affair, which he could not tolerate.
Authorities have registered a murder case, and the role of other family members is being examined. Puja’s relatives had expressed doubts about the suicide theory even before the postmortem results.
Sumit has been remanded to police custody pending further investigation.
