In a significant breakthrough for Sikkim’s anti-narcotics efforts, the state police arrested Subijan Subba, a 33-year-old man suspected to be the mastermind behind drug peddling and distribution across the region. Subba was apprehended from Bagdogra, West Bengal late Tuesday night.
Subba, originally from Aambotey Chisopani in Namchi district, had been on the radar of law enforcement for multiple past drug-related offenses. A special police team led by Jorethang SDPO Mingyur T. Nadik, including SHOs and PIs from Jorethang and Melli, executed the arrest operation.
According to Senior SP Karma Gyamtso Bhutia, Subba is linked to the recent seizure of 815 grams of heroin and is believed to be responsible for around 80% of drug trafficking in Sikkim, involving narcotics such as heroin and brown sugar.
Subba has been booked under Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses organized crime, alongside NDPS and SADA provisions. His arrest is expected to disrupt a vast network of illegal drug supply throughout the state.
Police also uncovered financial records showing bank transactions worth crores, suspected to be tied to his drug operations. These accounts may soon be frozen pending further investigation.
Authorities have warned that juvenile involvement in the network will be prosecuted as per legal provisions. Subba remains in police custody as the investigation expands to identify and arrest other members of his drug syndicate.
