Kolkata Police have arrested a serving police officer, Mintu Sarkar, attached to the Special Task Force (STF), in connection with a sensational Rs2.66 crore daylight robbery that occurred earlier this month in the city. Sarkar, originally from South Dinajpur district in North Bengal, was arrested late Tuesday night by the Detective Department of Kolkata Police.
Sarkar is the seventh person arrested in this high-profile case. Investigators are currently probing whether he was directly involved in the heist or served as an intermediary.
The robbery took place around 12 noon on May 5, when two employees of a foreign exchange trading firm were transporting Rs2.66 crore in cash via taxi from their Entally office to a nearby bank branch. Less than a kilometre into the journey, two men hijacked the taxi after the driver slowed down, forcibly entering the vehicle. They redirected the taxi to a secluded location and robbed the employees of the entire cash amount before fleeing in the same vehicle.
Six people had already been arrested in connection with the robbery, including one insider from the foreign exchange company. During interrogation, the accused revealed Mintu Sarkar’s name, prompting a late-night raid and questioning at his residence. After giving inconsistent responses, Sarkar was placed under arrest.
The investigation continues, as police attempt to unravel the full extent of Sarkar’s role and any further involvement from within the organization or law enforcement.
