by Amelia Crawford

Spokane, WA — Spokane police have arrested 37-year-old Chad A. Horne on suspicion of setting multiple fires near downtown Spokane earlier this week.

According to a Spokane Police Department statement, Horne was taken into custody shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Liberty Lake area. He had been wanted in connection with second-degree arson after police say he ignited several fires Tuesday, including one that caused significant damage to a church office and youth center affiliated with Orchard Christian Fellowship.

Horne was last seen on Wednesday afternoon near the Walmart at Sullivan Road and Broadway Avenue in Spokane Valley before his arrest.

This is not Horne’s first arson-related offense. Court records indicate he was arrested in June 2024 for setting fires in bushes and a portable toilet. After pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree reckless burning, he served two months in jail. Horne also faces a separate domestic violence charge unrelated to these recent events.

Fires Linked to Horne:

My Fresh Basket grocery store (door damage)

Former house at 310 S. Chandler St., used as a church youth center (significant damage)

Electric vehicle charger near Washington State University-Spokane campus

Additional grass and bush fires in Riverfront Park and nearby neighborhoods

The Spokane Fire Department reported battling 15 suspicious fires over 36 hours between Tuesday and Wednesday. Some fires forced evacuations near Spokane Falls Community College and residential areas, though no structures were lost. Fire crews, with assistance from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, have contained all fires and continue mop-up operations.

No injuries have been reported.

Police continue their investigation, urging the public to report any related information.
