A Spanish fraud suspect, Salvador Alejandro Llinas Onate, has been ordered to leave Taiwan within 10 days, according to the National Immigration Agency (NIA). This decision follows reports that the international fugitive was hiding in Taipei.
Onate is accused of renting out 1,189 vehicles through an Italian company and illegally selling them, allegedly making a profit of 30 million euros (approximately US$32.77 million). His company declared bankruptcy in 2019, and he went missing shortly after.
In 2020, Italian authorities uncovered the scheme and issued an international arrest warrant for Onate.
The NIA confirmed that it was aware of Onate’s presence and had requested him to report to the authorities yesterday evening. Given the serious nature of the charges against him, immigration officials have the right to bar him from entry under Article 18 of the Immigration Act, which allows for action against individuals who may “endanger national interests, public security, public order, or the good customs of the state.”
Furthermore, the NIA stated that under Article 36 of the act, the government can deport individuals who have temporarily entered the country without permission.
As Onate has an underage child with him, the agency advised him to make the necessary arrangements to leave Taiwan within the specified 10-day period.
