A Southwest Airlines pilot, David Allsop, 52, was arrested for drunkenness just before Flight 3772 was set to depart from Georgia to Chicago, causing a significant delay. Allsop, from New Hampshire, was taken into custody early Wednesday morning at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport after airport police noticed signs of intoxication.
According to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Allsop reportedly smelled of alcohol and exhibited other symptoms of drunkenness. Although authorities did not release specific breath or blood alcohol levels, Allsop was removed from the cockpit and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The incident resulted in a four-hour delay for Flight 3772. Allsop’s bail was set at US$3,500, and he has since been released on bond. The case has brought attention to the importance of safety protocols in aviation, as well as the consequences of flying under the influence.
