Delhi Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the theft of over 141 grams of gold biscuits from a commuter’s bag aboard a Delhi Metro train. The primary accused, Sonu Chand, 29, was nabbed after a sustained investigation involving CCTV surveillance across metro stations and train compartments.
The complaint was filed by Amit Santra on July 11, after he noticed that the gold biscuits had been stolen during his commute between Bahadurgarh and Shadipur stations. A case was promptly registered at the Raja Garden Metro police station.
Police tracked Sonu Chand, a habitual offender with at least six previous theft cases, and arrested him on July 23. Upon interrogation, he confessed to selling the stolen gold. A raid at his residence led to the recovery ofRs₹3 lakh in cash, suspected to be the proceeds from the sale.
Further questioning revealed the involvement of two associates:
Sumit Shinde, 21, owner of a gold refinery in Karol Bagh, was arrested and is currently under police remand.
Jai Prakash Tiwari, 31, a private finance company employee, has been bound down under legal provisions.
Chand, who earns a living as a paan vendor, allegedly capitalized on metro crowding to execute thefts discreetly. Authorities are still working to trace the remaining stolen gold and uncover the full extent of the trafficking network.
