NASHVILLE, Tenn. – John C. Drake Jr., the estranged son of Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake, is on the run after allegedly shooting two La Vergne officers during a confrontation outside a Dollar General store on Saturday.
Drake Jr., 38, has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2005, including multiple convictions. His most serious conviction came in 2009, when he was convicted of aggravated rape and became a registered sex offender. Records show he has violated sex offender registration laws multiple times.
According to La Vergne Police Chief Chris Moews, the officers were investigating a stolen vehicle when they approached Drake Jr. on Saturday. A struggle ensued, and Drake Jr. allegedly opened fire on the officers. Both officers have since been treated and released from the hospital.
Drake Jr. is now facing two charges of attempted first-degree murder. He fled the scene in the Lake Forest area of La Vergne, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has added him to their “Most Wanted” list. Authorities have issued a $2,500 reward for information leading to his arrest.
In a statement, MNPD Chief John Drake expressed his shock and sadness upon learning his estranged son was involved in the shooting. He emphasized that despite efforts in the past, his son turned to criminal behavior and has been out of his life for many years.
Law enforcement has warned the public that Drake Jr. should be considered armed and dangerous. He is described as 5’11”, with a muscular build, facial hair, and dreadlocks. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities immediately.
