MESQUITE, Texas — A suspect wanted for the murder of a Dallas youth football coach was arrested Monday after leading police on a car chase in a stolen vehicle. Authorities have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Skylar Wells.
According to police, Wells stole a car from a storage facility near U.S. Highway 80 and was spotted shortly after by a Mesquite officer who noticed the vehicle speeding and swerving. A pursuit followed, during which officers deployed spike strips that disabled the car and led to Wells’ arrest.
It wasn’t until he was in custody that officers learned Wells was wanted for the April 10 murder of Gerald Frazier, a beloved youth football coach from Dallas.
An arrest affidavit revealed that Frazier had allowed Wells to temporarily stay at his home but later asked him to leave due to disruptive behavior. Witnesses say Wells fatally shot Frazier during a confrontation.
While in jail, Wells allegedly assaulted four officers, including biting two of them, as they attempted to restrain him. He now faces charges of murder, vehicle theft, evading arrest, and four counts of assault on a public servant.
Wells is currently held at the Dallas County jail on a total bond of $760,000.
