A 32-year-old man, Siyaram Meena, has been arrested in Jaipur for staging a fake robbery to hide the fact that he had lost Rs1.6 lakh in online gambling.
On July 5, Meena called the police control room claiming that unidentified men in two vehicles had robbed him of Rs2 lakh near the Nai Ki Thadi area under Jaysinghpura Khor Police Station. He alleged the robbers stopped his motorcycle and snatched a cash-filled bag.
However, when SHO Mukesh Kumar and his team arrived, no signs of a robbery were found. Eyewitness statements didn’t match Meena’s claims, and CCTV footage showed him riding with the bag and later without it, with no vehicles stopping him.
When questioned further, Meena said the stolen cash was in two bundles of Rs500 notes. Officers pointed out that Rs2 lakh would require four bundles, not two, exposing the flawed lie.
Eventually, Meena confessed, admitting he had lost Rs1.6 lakh in online betting through an ID given by his friend Mohit. Ashamed and fearing pressure to repay the money, he deleted the betting app and fabricated the robbery story.
He even gave false vehicle numbers to mislead investigators, but the so-called suspects and crime scene turned out to be entirely fictitious.
Police have registered a case against Meena for filing a false report and misusing emergency services. Authorities emphasized that such acts divert valuable police resources and will be dealt with strictly.
