In a major crackdown, Sitapur Police have arrested six members of a gang that posed as policemen to steal cash from unsuspecting commuters. The accused, operating across multiple districts, have been sent to jail, officials confirmed.
According to Superintendent of Police Ankur Agarwal, the arrests were conducted jointly by teams from Ramkot Police Station and the Crime Branch. The gang members were identified as Sunny Rajput, Rajan alias Belua, Rohit, Brijesh, Rishabh Gihar, and Kunal.
Police seized Rs 20,200 in cash, five blades used for pickpocketing, a country-made pistol from Brijesh, and a vehicle used in the crimes. Investigations to trace additional members of the gang are ongoing.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to wearing police uniforms and maintaining police-style haircuts to appear authentic. They would approach bike riders and request lifts, exploiting the trust associated with the uniform. Once seated, they used blades to cut pockets and steal cash, then disembarked under some pretext, leaving victims unaware until later.
The gang carried out multiple incidents, including on November 27, 2025, in Maholi town, when Rohit stole cash from a biker. On January 30 near Gobarepurwa bridge, Kunal targeted a private bank employee, stealing around Rs 40,000 using the same method.
The breakthrough came after the bank employee filed a complaint. Crime Branch Inspector Satyendra Vikram Singh and his team analyzed CCTV footage, identifying the bike-borne suspects and a getaway car. Piecing together these clues led to the arrests.
Investigations revealed that all six accused are relatives from Kannauj, highlighting a coordinated family-run operation.
