Chicago Man Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi Faces Multiple Felony Charges

Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, the suspect who shot and injured a 39-year-old Jewish man and fired at first responders in Chicago, now faces a range of felony charges, including hate crime and terrorism.

Abdallahi, 22, allegedly targeted members of the Jewish community in Rogers Park over the weekend. Investigators, after reviewing digital evidence from his phone, confirmed that Abdallahi had planned the attack and specifically aimed at Jewish individuals. This evidence helped authorities charge him with terrorism and hate crime offenses.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx remarked that the actions were not spontaneous, but rather part of a deliberate effort to spread fear and harm the Jewish community. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed Abdallahi acted alone.

On Saturday morning, Abdallahi shot at a man walking to a temple, and then fired at police officers and paramedics when they responded to the scene. The police returned fire, striking Abdallahi, who remains hospitalized and has yet to provide a statement.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson reaffirmed the city’s commitment to combat antisemitism. “There is absolutely no place in Chicago for antisemitism or hatred toward our Jewish community,” Johnson stated.

Abdallahi faces additional charges, including attempted murder, aggravated battery, and attempted murder of a police officer. He is a Mauritanian national, and U.S. Border Patrol had previously encountered him in California in 2023. Following his arrest, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) placed an immigration detainer on Abdallahi.

Thankfully, the victim of the shooting was released from the hospital over the weekend. Police officials stated that while the injuries were severe, they were not life-threatening.
