PORTAGE, Mich. — A woman is in custody after allegedly stealing a vehicle with an infant inside, prompting a swift police response across the Portage and Kalamazoo area.
Shyann Sanchez, 25, of Kalamazoo, is facing multiple charges including unlawful imprisonment, child abandonment, unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle, and resisting or obstructing a police officer.
The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, when Portage police were called to the 7000 block of Green Forest Drive on reports of a stolen vehicle with an 8-month-old baby inside.
Law enforcement agencies across the region were immediately alerted. Approximately an hour later, a Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer located the vehicle backed into a driveway on the 600 block of Oak Street, with the infant still inside and unharmed.
Officers quickly located Sanchez at a nearby motel. She was arrested and remains in custody. The child was examined by EMS and found to be in good health.
According to investigators, Sanchez had been visiting someone at the Green Forest residence the night before and left at some point during the night. The motive behind her actions remains under investigation.
