Two Indian-origin men, Shivamkumar Patel and his friend Anil Yaganti, were arrested by Marietta police in Georgia following a strange case that began with a 911 call. Patel had initially contacted police, reporting that he and Yaganti had detained a suspected shoplifter, 32-year-old Jeremy Minter, at their liquor store.
Under Georgia law, merchants can detain suspected shoplifters under certain conditions, and Patel and Yaganti held Minter at gunpoint until police arrived. The officers issued Minter a criminal trespass warning, barring him from the store for five years.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn when police received a call from Minter claiming he was the victim. According to him, Patel and Yaganti had held him at gunpoint before contacting police and searched his vehicle without permission. Minter alleged that during this search, the two men stole his handgun.
Following extensive interviews and a review of surveillance footage, police found discrepancies in Patel and Yaganti’s accounts and concluded that Minter’s version was accurate. Consequently, both men were arrested and now face multiple serious charges related to the armed robbery and theft.
