In a major operation, counterfeit Indian currency with a face value of Rs33.56 lakh was seized from a house near the India-Bangladesh border at Basirhat on Sunday. One individual, identified as Sheikh Abdul Karim alias Raja, was arrested in connection with the seizure.

A joint raid was conducted by the Special Operation Group and officials from the Matia police station, led by OC Maloy Mondal, acting on a tip-off. The operation led to the discovery of fake Rs500 and Rs200 currency notes, along with blank paper cuttings resembling currency note dimensions.

Karim was produced before the Basirhat sub-divisional court and has been remanded to police custody for seven days. Authorities suspect a cross-border connection and are investigating if he has links to Bangladeshi counterfeit networks.

According to Baduria SDPO Rahul Mishra, the accused is a repeat offender, previously involved in theft and robbery cases registered at Matia police station.

Police believe this seizure may be part of a larger counterfeit currency racket operating along the international border and are continuing their probe.
