STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A reported shoplifting incident at a home improvement store last month led to the arrest of two men and the discovery of multiple outstanding warrants, police said.

On Jan. 21, 2026, at about 4 p.m., officers with the Stafford Township Police Department responded to Lowe’s at 297 Route 72 in Manahawkin for a high-value theft in progress.

Police arrested Shayne R. Macavoy, 34, of Waretown, who is accused of attempting to steal merchandise valued at approximately $1,852. During the investigation, officers also encountered Michael S. Shecton, 34, of Beachwood.

A records check revealed both men had active warrants from other jurisdictions. Macavoy was charged with third-degree shoplifting under New Jersey law and was found to have multiple outstanding warrants, including one issued by the Manchester Township Municipal Court.

Shecton was arrested on an outstanding warrant issued by the same court.

Both men were transported to Stafford Township Police Headquarters for processing before being turned over to the Manchester Township Police Department. They were later remanded to the Ocean County Jail.

The arrests were made by Officers Patrick Walker and Austin Pharo, with assistance from Officer Theodore Caporrino.
