GREENVILLE, S.C. – A woman has been charged with murder following a gang-related shooting that left a 5-year-old boy dead and his twin brother critically injured, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to Belle Meade Apartments around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday after reports of multiple gunshot victims. At the scene, they found two 5-year-old twins and an 18-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the twins later died, while his brother remains in critical condition. The 18-year-old is expected to survive.
Authorities said surveillance footage showed multiple individuals exchanging gunfire, with at least two active shooters. Sheriff Hobart Lewis condemned the violence, calling it “insane” and a “senseless act” that has deeply shaken the community.
Shawnteza La Shay Sherman, 31, has been arrested and charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy. A juvenile was also charged with a weapons offense for possessing a firearm while under 18.
“This is what happens when you have gang members and thugs shooting into crowds,” said Sheriff Lewis. “We’re going to find everyone involved and lock them up.”
The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement continues to search for additional suspects.
