MARION, Ill. (KBSI) — A southern Illinois man has been arrested in connection with a major burglary at the Lake of Egypt Water District that resulted in more than $19,000 in losses, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies first responded to the scene on August 19, after brass fittings were reported stolen from the district. Later that same day, several of the missing items were found discarded in a nearby wooded area.
Two days later, on August 21, surveillance footage captured a man returning to the property, allegedly to retrieve the hidden stolen goods. That suspect was identified as Shawn D. Quertermous.
A nationwide arrest warrant was issued for Quertermous on September 3, charging him with burglary, a Class 2 felony. He was taken into custody on September 11 and booked into the Williamson County Jail.
Sheriff Jeff Diederich commended investigators for their dedication, emphasizing that crimes targeting critical infrastructure can significantly affect public safety and quality of life.
