KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Shawn Harris, 38, has been identified as the suspect in the fatal shooting of Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Elijah Ming, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).
The incident occurred Saturday afternoon in the 2600 block of S. 30th Street, where Deputy Ming and a Kansas City, Kansas police officer responded to a call from a woman moving out of a residence. Harris opened fire on the officers during the response.
Harris was wounded in the exchange of gunfire with police. After receiving treatment, he was released from the hospital and booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center. He now faces capital murder charges for the killing of Deputy Ming, with formal charges pending.
Harris has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2011, including felony theft, multiple counts of attempted aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, felony tampering with a motor vehicle, and damage to jail property. He served over 11 years in prison with concurrent sentences across Kansas and Missouri.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Harris was discharged from state custody on December 11, 2024, less than a year before this fatal shooting.
Authorities continue to investigate the case as they prepare formal charges against Harris.
