ONTARIO COUNTY, N.Y. —
A Rochester woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $3,700 in SNAP benefits from a person she was assigned to assist, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.
Shatoya Heckstall, 37, was charged with Identity Theft in the 1st Degree after investigators said she misused Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds belonging to a client.
Authorities said Heckstall worked as a representative payee for the victim through DePaul Community Services. She allegedly canceled the victim’s SNAP card without permission, then requested a replacement card, which she kept and used at multiple stores in and around Rochester, obtaining $3,770.62 worth of goods.
Heckstall was taken into custody on Thursday and transported to the Ontario County Jail for pre-arraignment detention. She is scheduled to appear in Canandaigua Town Court on the identity theft charge at a later date.
Investigators continue to review financial records to determine whether additional charges may be filed.
