THIBODAUX, La. — A Thibodaux police officer has been arrested after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the local Fraternal Order of Police chapter while serving as its treasurer, according to Louisiana State Police.
Authorities said 53-year-old Shane Savant used the organization’s bank card to make unauthorized personal purchases. The alleged misconduct came to light in January when board members of the Thibodaux Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #52 noticed suspicious transactions on bank statements and alerted Police Chief Bryan Zeringue.
Savant was placed on administrative leave as state police launched an investigation. Detectives later determined that the purchases were made while Savant was off duty.
He was arrested on charges of theft greater than $5,000 and illegal transmission of monetary funds. Savant resigned from the Thibodaux Police Department one day before his arrest.
He is currently being held at the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex.
