A self-styled godman, Sanjay Das (40), was arrested for allegedly killing his 21-year-old nephew, Sumant Das, following a longstanding family enmity. The incident took place in Jahanpur village within the Jagatsinghpur police limits on Thursday.
Sumant, a Plus Three Science student at SVM College, was attacked by his uncle with a sharp weapon while brushing his teeth in the morning. Sanjay inflicted grievous injuries to Sumant’s head, abdomen, and other parts of his body. After Sumant collapsed, Sanjay dragged the body and dumped it in a nearby pond.
Sanjay, who proclaimed himself a ‘baba’ and engaged in spiritual activities, had distanced himself from family responsibilities. His lifestyle, including his long hair, beard, and erratic behavior, was strongly opposed by his elder brother and Sumant’s father, Durga Charan Das. Sumant too disapproved of his uncle’s ways, leading to frequent confrontations and building resentment.
Police have arrested Sanjay Das and are investigating the case further.
