NEWTON COUNTY — A Newton County jury has convicted a second man in the 2022 shooting death of 29-year-old Charles Edward Stanley III.
Tyrez Riquan Bell was found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony, according to the Newton County District Attorney’s Office. The verdict was delivered Friday afternoon.
Bell’s co-defendant, Shane Robinson, was convicted of felony murder and related charges earlier this year, on March 31.
Deadly 2022 Shooting
The fatal shooting occurred on March 5, 2022, between 11 p.m. and midnight, as Stanley drove along Harvey Wood Drive. Prosecutors said Bell and Robinson fired a combined 20 rounds from “AR-style firearms” at Stanley’s vehicle.
Bell fired seven shots
Robinson fired 13 shots
Stanley was struck and killed.
Both men remain in custody pending sentencing next month.
Background From 2022 Arrest Warrants
According to previous reporting by The Covington News, an arrest warrant stated that Robinson “grabbed his AR-15 rifle and drove” to confront Stanley with the intent to “scare” him.
“When Charles was backing up, Shane admitted to firing several rounds at the vehicle,” the 2022 warrant said. “Shane also initially stated that he fired rounds at the vehicle as it was driving away.”
Information about Bell’s specific actions at the time was not detailed in the earlier documents.
DA McGinley Responds
District Attorney Randy McGinley condemned the violence and praised the prosecution team:
“Senseless gun violence took the life of Mr. Stanley and now two men, who were in their 20s, face a sentence of at least 30 years in prison. Thankfully, no one else was injured when the defendants opened fire with high-powered firearms in a neighborhood, shooting at a car 20 times as it drove away.”
McGinley added that the guilty verdicts represent years of dedicated work from investigators and prosecutors to secure justice for Stanley’s family.
