Sean-Michael Johnson Arrested for Impersonating ICE Agent

by Amelia Crawford

Authorities in multiple states have arrested individuals accused of impersonating Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, intensifying fears within migrant communities during the Trump administration’s heightened immigration enforcement.

In South Carolina, 33-year-old Sean-Michael Johnson has been charged with kidnapping and impersonating a police officer after allegedly detaining a group of Latino men along a Charleston County road. According to court records, Johnson is accused of “willfully and unlawfully presenting himself as an ICE agent” and preventing the vehicle from moving.

The incident took place on Sullivan’s Island, near Charleston, on January 29 and was recorded by one of the victims. In the video, Johnson can be heard taunting the victims, saying, “You all got caught! Where are you from, Mexico? You’re going back to Mexico!” He is seen taking the driver’s keys and mocking the driver’s accent. At one point, Johnson attempts to take the driver’s phone, knocking it from his hand when the driver speaks Spanish to a friend.

Johnson was charged with three counts of kidnapping, one count of impersonating a law enforcement officer, petty larceny, and assault and battery. CNN has been unable to identify an attorney for Johnson. In his court appearance, a public defender stated that Johnson deeply regretted his actions.

Johnson was granted bail over the weekend. During a Saturday hearing, his family spoke on his behalf, explaining that he has mental health issues and needs continued therapy.

An ICE spokesperson condemned the actions of impersonators, stating that such actions are dangerous and punishable under federal, state, and local laws. The spokesperson emphasized that ICE agents are highly trained professionals committed to enforcing the law and protecting national security.
