FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Santiago Cruz was arrested at a hospital in Fresno after a gun holster fell out of his pocket, linking him to a shooting incident earlier that morning, police report.
Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert near Blackstone Avenue and Grant Avenue on Thursday, where they found four spent shell casings. They soon learned a gunshot victim had been taken to the nearby Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC).
The victim, a male, suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and was transported to CRMC, where he remains in stable condition.
At the same time, Cruz arrived at CRMC with a stab wound to the chest. While being treated and placed on a gurney, a gun holster fell from Cruz’s pocket, alerting hospital security and police.
Upon investigation, police identified the man as Santiago Cruz. The driver who had brought Cruz to the hospital fled the scene on foot.
Police later searched the vehicle and recovered a firearm hidden under the front passenger seat, where Cruz had been sitting.
Authorities say Cruz and another suspect attacked the shooting victim. The victim defended himself by stabbing Cruz in the chest, and Cruz shot the victim in the legs while fleeing.
Cruz was listed in critical but stable condition. Once medically cleared, he will face multiple gun-related charges and be booked into the county jail.
