UBON RATCHATHANI, THAILAND — Police have arrested four men in connection with a violent assault on a 65-year-old woman in Ubon Ratchathani, an incident authorities say stemmed from a personal family dispute.
According to Police Lieutenant General Wathana Yijeen, commander of Region 3, and Police Major General Patiyut Singsamorot of the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Police, the suspects were identified as 27-year-old Apisit, 32-year-old Sanram, 34-year-old Arthit, and 28-year-old Narongrit. They were arrested under warrants issued by the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Court (Nos. 323, 324, and 325/2025).
The charges include causing grievous bodily harm, nighttime trespassing, and property damage.
The incident occurred on the night of Saturday, June 28, when the suspects allegedly attacked the elderly woman—mother of a woman named Natchayaporn—with an iron rod. Following the assault, Natchayaporn filed a complaint with local authorities.
An investigation by the Varinchamrab District Police quickly identified the four men. Apisit surrendered first, admitting to being present during the attack but denying any direct involvement. Further evidence led to arrest warrants for the remaining suspects.
During questioning, Sanram, the victim’s son-in-law, admitted to assaulting the woman, while Arthit and Narongrit claimed they only drove Sanram to the scene and did not participate in the violence.
Sanram explained that the confrontation arose from an ongoing family conflict with his brother-in-law, 40-year-old Chaturong. He claimed that he had gone to the house to meet his wife about a bank loan, but a verbal altercation with Chaturong escalated into a physical fight. During the struggle, he allegedly threw a plant branch, which accidentally struck his mother-in-law.
Expressing remorse, Sanram stated he never intended to hurt her and denied that the attack was related to any outstanding financial issues, despite prior borrowing history.
Police Lieutenant General Wathana noted that the initial investigation points to a personal vendetta, not gang-related loan shark activity. However, authorities remain cautious and have ordered a deeper investigation to confirm the motive.
