Sanjeev Kumar Sentenced in Jasper County Fraud Case

Senior targeted in government impersonation scam

by Sophia Bennett

Two men have been sentenced in Jasper County for their involvement in a large-scale fraud operation that targeted a senior citizen through a government impersonation scam.

Sanjeev Kumar, 41, of Owensboro, Kentucky, pleaded guilty to facilitating a criminal network. He was sentenced to a prison term of up to 25 years. A restitution hearing for Kumar is scheduled for March 16.

Abdul Samad Hussin Ahmadbin, 35, of Chicago, Illinois, previously pleaded guilty in January to one count of fourth-degree theft. He received a deferred judgment.

The case originated from an investigation launched in June 2025 after a Jasper County resident fell victim to a government impersonation scam. Authorities say the victim had been targeted multiple times before law enforcement intervened.

The Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mid Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force worked together with the victim to set up a sting operation in July 2025. Investigators arranged a controlled exchange in which the suspects believed they were collecting a large quantity of gold from the victim.

Kumar traveled to the victim’s residence to retrieve a box believed to contain the gold, using transportation provided by Hussin Ahmadbin. Both men were taken into custody at the scene.

Officials are urging Iowans who believe they or someone they know may be involved in an active scam to contact the Iowa Department of Insurance and Financial Services, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, or local law enforcement for assistance.
