Sani Shaibu Arrested in $8,000 ZIMRA Fraud Case

31-year-old vanished after fake vehicle release deal

by Sophia Bennett

Sani Shaibu, 31, appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo on fraud charges after allegedly vanishing with US$8,000 paid to secure the release of an impounded Toyota Prado.

The complainant, Spencer Murindagomo, 41, hired Shaibu on January 20, 2026, to assist with the release of his employer’s vehicle seized by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority. Shaibu allegedly misrepresented his ability to secure the release and demanded the full payment upfront.

Murindagomo paid the cash, but Shaibu disappeared without making any payments to ZIMRA. Police arrested Shaibu after confirmation from ZIMRA that no progress had been made on the vehicle release.

Shaibu is represented by lawyer Moffat Makuvatsine and was granted US$100 bail. To date, none of the alleged US$8,000 fraud has been recovered.
