In a late-night anti-narcotics operation on Thursday, Hailakandi district police arrested two suspected drug peddlers and seized 14.24 grams of heroin along National Highway-6 in the Nischintapur area.
Acting on a specific intelligence input, a team from the Hailakandi police station set up a checkpoint and intercepted two individuals travelling on a scooter. Upon inspection, officers discovered heroin concealed in a soap case.
The accused were identified as Samsul Haque Barbhuiya alias Niru (28), a resident of Narainpur, and Selim Uddin Choudhury (40) from Vichingcha village. They were reportedly en route from Bhaurghat to Lala to sell the narcotics when they were apprehended.
The scooter used to transport the contraband was also seized during the operation. A case has been registered under Sections 21(b)/29 of the NDPS Act.
A senior police official confirmed that the operation was part of a larger crackdown on drug trafficking across the Barak Valley region. “We are keeping close surveillance on routes and individuals linked to the trade. These efforts will continue with full force,” the officer said.
This arrest adds to the growing list of successful interdictions in the region, as police intensify their fight against narcotics in Assam.
