The Kodagu district police have cracked the murder of Sampath, also known as Shambhu, a wealthy contractor and the prime accused in the high-profile 2016 egg-hurling case involving Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Sampath, who made headlines for allegedly throwing eggs at Siddaramaiah’s car during a political visit to Madikeri when the latter was Opposition Leader, was recently found murdered in a case that sent shockwaves through the district.

According to Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan, the investigation has led to the arrest of three individuals:

Kiran

Sangeetha (Kiran’s wife)

Ganapathi of Kushalnagar, who was also reportedly involved in the 2016 egg-hurling case

SP Ramarajan confirmed that the motive behind the murder was blackmail. The accused had been extorting Sampath and ultimately killed him when tensions escalated.

The case has brought renewed attention to the controversial political violence incident of 2016, linking it with a more recent and deadly turn of events.

Police continue their investigation and have not ruled out further arrests.
