In a major development in the Swapan Kamilla murder case, Siliguri police on Wednesday arrested Sajal Sarkar, making him the third person apprehended in connection with the jeweller’s death.
Kamilla’s body was discovered in an abandoned area of New Town on October 29, after he was allegedly kidnapped from his jewellery workshop in Duttabad, Salt Lake, on October 28.
Police sources revealed that Sarkar has direct links to Kamilla’s death. Earlier, authorities had arrested Raju Dhali, a driver associated with Rajganj BDO Prasanta Barman, and Tufan Thapa, an acquaintance of the BDO. Investigations suggest that six individuals, five from North Bengal, were involved in the murder.
According to police, Kamilla was allegedly targeted after BDO Barman learned that stolen gold ornaments from his house had been handed over to him. Ashoke Kar, a dog trainer, reportedly admitted to stealing the ornaments and said he and Kamilla were assaulted inside a building in New Town on October 28.
BDO Barman has denied involvement, calling the allegations a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation. Sarkar has been booked under charges of murder and destroying evidence and will be brought to Kolkata on a transit remand.
Authorities continue to investigate the case to trace other accused and establish the full sequence of events leading to Kamilla’s murder.
