Two security guards deployed at a Reliance Smart Bazaar in Sector 8, Panchkula, have been arrested for allegedly stealing store merchandise over an extended period.
The accused have been identified as Sahil Chauhan and Piyush, both natives of Hamirpur district in Himachal Pradesh. Police took them into custody after obtaining their remand and initiating recovery proceedings for the stolen items.
According to police officials, the store owner, a resident of Zirakpur, filed a complaint on January 9, alleging that the two guards had been systematically pilfering goods from the store. An internal stock audit conducted by the management reportedly revealed missing items worth approximately Rs1.5 lakh.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Panchkula, Srishti Gupta, said that a theft case was registered at the Sector 7 police station based on the complaint. The investigation was led by officer Amandeep, who acted on specific intelligence inputs to crack the case.
Sahil Chauhan, who was residing as a tenant in Manimajra, was arrested on January 10 and produced before a court the following day. He was remanded to five days of police custody. During interrogation, Sahil allegedly disclosed the involvement of his colleague Piyush.
Following this revelation, police arrested Piyush from his native village in Hamirpur on January 14. He was produced before a court on Thursday and remanded to one day of police custody.
Police officials stated that further questioning will focus on identifying where the stolen goods were sold and whether any other individuals were involved in purchasing the items. After completion of his police remand, Sahil was sent to judicial custody.
