Sahil Ali, identified as one of the masterminds behind Assam’s extensive vehicle theft racket, was arrested from Goalpara and brought to Guwahati. He played a pivotal role in supplying stolen cars and motorcycles to organized crime networks operating across states.
Currently held at Dispur Police Station, Sahil’s arrest comes amid an ongoing investigation into the wider vehicle theft syndicate.
Guwahati police recently recovered 13 stolen motorcycles, one Scorpio SUV, and two Thar SUVs. So far, 11 accused thieves have been arrested, including two bus employees, highlighting the worrying involvement of transport staff who facilitated moving stolen vehicles from Guwahati to Manipur via night buses.
The gang, primarily based in Manipur, has been transporting stolen vehicles to other states, with recoveries near the Meghalaya and Bangladesh borders. Police noted that Royal Enfield motorcycles can be stolen in under 45 seconds, underlining the syndicate’s efficiency.
Investigations revealed that the thieves frequently travel from Manipur to Guwahati by air, stay for a few days, and return after stealing multiple vehicles—sometimes as many as four in a single day. These stolen vehicles are often sold across the border in Myanmar.
Among those arrested in connection with the Royal Enfield theft case are Gaingamlung Golmei and Heibokmayum Monouwar from Lilong, Manipur, along with Sahil Ali of Rangia, Assam. Several others connected to the theft and transport of vehicles have also been detained.
Police continue their efforts to apprehend additional members of the gang and dismantle the entire vehicle theft network.
