In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Crime Branch seized 123.6 kg of ganja worth Rs 31 lakh near the defunct Kharegaon toll plaza in Kalwa on Wednesday, arresting two residents of Nashik district.
Police said the action was based on a specific tip-off regarding a large consignment of narcotics being transported towards the Mumbra area. Acting swiftly, a team laid a trap along the Nashik–Mumbai highway stretch and intercepted a car travelling from Bhiwandi towards Thane.
During the search of the vehicle, officers discovered five plastic bags concealed inside, containing the contraband.
The arrested accused were identified as Sagar Govind Pawar (33), a resident of Nandur Shingote in Sinnar, and Dhondiram Chaitu Bhagde (50) from Nandgaon Sado in Igatpuri, both located in Nashik district.
Further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and identify other individuals involved in the drug network.
