WARWICK, R.I. (WJAR) — Roy Mangum, 40, of Warwick, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for robbing a TD Bank at gunpoint, leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase, and causing a crash that seriously injured a father of two.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha announced the sentence on Tuesday, noting that Mangum also received 35 years of probation. Mangum pleaded nolo contendere to three counts of first-degree robbery, eluding police, driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, and multiple firearm charges.
The robbery occurred on January 5, 2024, when Mangum, wearing a mask, robbed the bank and fled in a black rental pickup truck. Police quickly located the vehicle and attempted a stop, but Mangum sped off, reaching speeds over 100 mph before crashing into a vehicle carrying a father and his two children.
Police recovered a firearm and $5,057 in stolen cash from the scene. Attorney General Neronha emphasized the gravity of Mangum’s actions, stating, “This is not a movie plot—it’s real life. He showed complete disregard for the safety of others.”
Mangum will serve his sentence at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) in Cranston.
