BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Rodrigo Lara, a Bakersfield resident, was convicted on August 28, 2025, for the murder of 33-year-old Javier Sanchez, according to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. Lara was found guilty of first-degree murder, possession of ammunition as a prohibited person, conspiracy to commit murder, and gang conspiracy.
The jury concluded that the murder and conspiracy were committed to benefit a criminal street gang.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 25, 2024, when Lara went on foot to a gathering on the 400 block of Lloyd Street in east Bakersfield. Prosecutors said Lara hid in a dark driveway area where the victim, Sanchez, was present. Around 3 a.m., Lara opened fire as Sanchez approached his vehicle, fatally wounding him. Lara then fled the scene.
Police recovered Lara’s belongings along his escape path, including an empty 9mm magazine, live rounds, and a blood-stained shirt. Surveillance footage also captured Lara breaking his cell phone.
District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer condemned the crime, emphasizing the office’s commitment to fighting gang violence. Lara faces sentencing on September 30, 2025, with a potential prison term of 55 years to life.
The DA’s office noted the jury could not reach unanimous verdicts on some charges, including who fired the fatal shot, but confirmed Lara’s involvement in the gang conspiracy.
