MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 28-year-old Memphis man has been arrested following a shooting incident during the RiverBeat Music Festival over the weekend in Downtown Memphis.
Robert Mays, of Memphis, was taken into custody and charged with attempted second-degree murder and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, according to court documents.
The shooting occurred early Saturday morning, around 3 a.m., near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Front Street. Memphis Police (MPD) officers, who were in the area during the festival, heard gunshots and shortly after saw a man wearing a ski mask walking with a handgun.
Officers pursued the suspect, later identified as Mays, and commanded him to drop his weapon. After a brief foot chase, Mays was apprehended by police.
Investigators later found blood and several spent shell casings near an alley at the intersection of MLK Jr. Avenue and Front Street. Witnesses at the scene told investigators that Mays had argued with another man before the situation escalated into gunfire, injuring the man.
The victim, who initially had life-threatening injuries, was later reported to be in stable condition with non-critical injuries. He confirmed to police that the shooter, Mays, was wearing a ski mask at the time of the incident.
