Celebrated Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday inside their Brentwood, California, home, authorities confirmed. Police say the couple were victims of a homicide, and their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with their deaths.
Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody Sunday night in Los Angeles and booked on suspicion of murder, according to law enforcement officials. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said Monday that investigators believe Nick Reiner was responsible for the killings. He remains in custody without bail.
The Reiners’ bodies were discovered by their youngest child, daughter Romy, at the family’s Brentwood residence, a neighborhood known for its celebrity homes. Multiple reports indicate the couple suffered multiple stab wounds, though officials have not formally released the cause of death.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive, and police cautioned against speculation circulating online. The case is expected to be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, where prosecutors will determine whether to formally file charges.
Rob Reiner, known for directing iconic films including This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, and The Princess Bride, had been married to Michele Singer Reiner for 36 years. Together, they had two sons and a daughter.
In past interviews, the family spoke openly about Nick Reiner’s long struggle with substance abuse, which inspired the 2015 semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, co-written and directed by father and son. Both Rob and Michele Reiner previously described years of hardship as their son moved in and out of rehabilitation programs and experienced homelessness during his youth.
Despite those struggles, the family said working on the film helped heal their relationship. Rob Reiner later said their bond grew stronger during the process, while Nick expressed appreciation for the collaboration but emphasized his desire for independence.
The investigation into the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner remains ongoing.
