Kapu police have arrested a couple accused of forging land records and cheating financial institutions of a total of Rs1.02 crore, including a Rs45 lakh loan from the Katapadi Co-operative Agricultural Society.

The arrested individuals are Riyanath Banu (25), from Mallaru Kombagudde, and her husband Nouman Ismail (33), from Bhaskar Nagar, Uchila Bada village.

Between February 21 and March 27, 2024, the couple, with the intent to defraud, pledged fake property documents and secured a Rs45 lakh loan from the Katapadi society, presenting Dinesh and Rajesh as guarantors. They made payments for only three months before defaulting.

When the society verified the documents with government offices, authorities discovered that the couple had forged sale deeds belonging to Shakunthala R., manipulated agreement papers, and faked signatures and seals of sub-registrars and revenue officials to create fraudulent documents.

Following the complaint lodged by branch manager Modin D. Khan on January 3, Kapu police launched a detailed investigation, tracking the duo across Bengaluru, Jamkhandi, and Kerala. They were eventually traced to Kottakkal in Malappuram, Kerala. After a month-long undercover surveillance, police arrested the couple on August 12.

Authorities have confirmed that this arrest is a major breakthrough in uncovering organized property and financial fraud in the region.
