MIAMI, USA — Authorities have arrested Ricardo José Blanco Núñez, a 33-year-old Venezuelan national, accused of stealing more than $800,000 worth of memory cards from his employer, Abound Trading, and using the proceeds to purchase virtual gifts on TikTok in an effort to gain recognition during live streams.
According to investigators, Blanco Núñez allegedly admitted to stealing merchandise valued at $811,250, part of a broader $2.5 million inventory shortfall reported by the company. Authorities say the thefts were carried out over time while he was employed by the firm.
Blanco Núñez was arrested on February 2, 2026, after investigators say he attempted to commit another theft. He now faces a charge of cargo theft exceeding $50,000, a felony under Florida law.
He is currently being held without bond at the Miami-Dade County Jail and is represented by the Public Defender’s Office.
Beyond the financial losses, the case has renewed discussion around the risks of digital validation addiction. A 2023 American Psychological Association study warned that compulsive spending tied to social media approval can be linked to behavioral disorders, particularly when driven by the pursuit of online popularity.
Blanco Núñez’s legal situation may further escalate on the immigration front, as he remains in custody under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This could lead to additional consequences as the criminal case progresses.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, while Abound Trading continues to assess the full scope of its losses.
