LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reports that an ongoing investigation has led to charges against two men accused of illegally killing alligators across Southwest Florida.
Wildlife officials say Reagan Weidner and Conor Wiegand allegedly killed alligators in Manatee, Sarasota, and Hardee counties, actions that experts warn could disrupt Florida’s delicate ecosystem.
Florida Gulf Coast University zoology and biology professor Christina Anaya described the allegations as deeply concerning. She explained that alligators play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling animal populations, creating habitats for other species, and even reducing disease risks when handled legally.
FWC noted that the two suspects were the subject of multiple reports throughout 2024 in Sarasota County, connected to unlawful possession, harassment, and illegal taking of alligators. Search warrants executed in February 2025 uncovered forensic evidence, including social media posts, linking them to several potential violations.
The men now face a total of 69 felony charges and 23 misdemeanor charges, including illegal alligator hunting, animal fighting, and the alleged sale of firearms to minors.
FWC reminds the public that alligator hunting in Florida is strictly regulated. The agency provides guidelines on obtaining valid harvest permits, approved hunting methods, and legal hunting seasons on its website.
