ACCRA, Ghana — A 19-year-old man, Rashid Aziz, has been sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for conspiracy, unlawful entry, and theft. The ruling was handed down by Presiding Judge Isaac Addo after Aziz pleaded guilty to all charges.
His co-accused, 20-year-old Nelson Godwin Ezel, denied the charges and has been remanded into police custody until his next court appearance on June 11, 2025.
The incident occurred at dawn on May 15, 2025, when the pair allegedly broke into the home of Fati Ahmed, a trader residing in Madina. Stolen items included:
An iPhone 11 Pro Max (GH¢5,500)
A Samsung tablet (GH¢1,200)
Jewellery worth GH¢3,000
GH¢3,000 in cash
According to Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, the complainant discovered the burglary around 4:50 AM and reported it to her brother, Abdul Rashid, who used tracking software to trace the iPhone to a repair shop in Korle Bu.
The repair shop operator, who had been asked to unlock the phone, identified the suspect and handed over both the iPhone and the young man to the complainant, who then alerted Nima Police.
The suspect cooperated and named Aziz and Ezel as the individuals who had given him the device. Both were later found and arrested, along with some of the stolen items, and taken to the James Town Police Station.
During interrogation, Aziz confessed, claiming they broke in due to lack of money for transport back to Agbogbloshie.
Aziz was convicted based on his admission, while proceedings against Ezel continue.
