In a major breakthrough, a man accused in a theft case in Ri-Bhoi, who had been on the run for over four years, was traced and arrested in Kerala. The fugitive, Ranjan Borgohain, hailing from Duliajan in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, had escaped from police custody on November 20, 2020. Borgohain was initially arrested in connection with a theft case under Khanapara PS Case No. 52(11)2020, filed under section 381 of the IPC, but managed to elude authorities since his escape.

The long-running manhunt came to an end earlier this week when Ri-Bhoi Police received a vital tip-off, leading them to track Borgohain to Perumbavoor, a town in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, where he had been working as a laborer under a false name. Upon confirmation of his location, the Kerala Police were alerted and a formal request for assistance was sent to the local authorities.

On March 7, acting swiftly, the Ernakulam police apprehended the accused. A team from Ri-Bhoi then traveled to Kerala, secured a transit remand from the local court, and brought Borgohain back to Ri-Bhoi. He was formally arrested on Saturday and is set to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Nongpoh on Sunday.

Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore expressed his gratitude to the Kerala Police for their quick and effective cooperation in apprehending the long-absconding accused.
