Ramesh Mali, a man accused of smuggling Rs18 crore worth of gold, was arrested by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials at Ahmedabad airport. Mali, who was attempting to flee the country, was apprehended during his escape by DRI authorities.
Earlier, Mumbai DRI officials had gathered intelligence indicating that two women, Payal Jain and Pinku Devi, were traveling with smuggled gold on a train to Mumbai Central. The women planned to deliver the gold to a nearby building. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, officials intercepted the women in a cab, finding a total of 23 kg of gold in their bags.
Both Payal Jain and Pinku Devi were arrested. Preliminary investigations revealed that Ramesh Mali had supplied the gold to the women, leading authorities to initiate a search for him. This investigation eventually led to Mali’s arrest at Ahmedabad airport.
