Rajasthan Police have arrested Sataram, the alleged mastermind behind a Rs20 crore insurance fraud racket involving false vehicle theft claims. The arrest took place at a visa office in Jaipur as he attempted to flee the country.
Police investigations revealed that Sataram registered multiple fake theft cases across various police stations, including Gudamalani, Baytu, Pachpadra, Jasol, Sindhari, Asop, Sendra, and Jaitaran. Through these cases, he fraudulently claimed insurance money by reporting expensive trucks and trailers as stolen.
The modus operandi involved re-registering the “stolen” vehicles in Arunachal Pradesh under new number plates and leasing them to oil companies. The racket extended beyond Rajasthan, operating in Delhi and Gujarat as well. Three vehicles linked to the scam have been seized so far.
Police suspect involvement of a transport department employee, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain if a DTO and an ASI are complicit in the scheme. Authorities plan to collaborate with the Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax Department to probe the accused’s assets.
Further, police are examining vehicle theft cases in the Jodhpur range from the past decade to uncover other potential crimes linked to the gang. Additional arrests are anticipated as the investigation progresses.
