Two men, Ali Tayyab and Abbas Mustafa, were arrested in Raichur district for impersonating police officers and robbing women of their gold jewellery. The duo would warn women about fines for wearing gold and then steal their jewellery under the pretense of helping to wrap it, said officials from West Station police.
In a recent incident, they stole a 20-gram gold chain valued at Rs 2 lakh from an elderly woman named Padma in Raichur city before fleeing on a motorcycle. Following the theft, the police formed a special team to apprehend the suspects.
The accused were arrested on Saturday near a barricade along the highway close to Gabbur police station limits in Devdurg taluk while checking vehicles. Investigations revealed their involvement in similar jewellery thefts in Pune. The stolen gold chain from Padma was recovered by the police.
